Improve strength through time under tension

To improve your strength, we usually think of doing lots of heavy weight lifting. This isn’t always the case, yes of course heavy weight lifting will increase strength. However, if I’m training an older individual who can’t lift really heavy weights, I can use time under tension to improve strength. You can do this with weight or without weights. There are many body weight exercises that can be done under tension or isometric hold to improve strength without using the heavy weights.

How can time under tension help me in my training?

If for example you don’t have weight or you want to increase the intensity of a movement without increasing the load. You can slow the movement down, this will make the muscle have to work harder in any position which will help you build strength and muscle. As well as slowing any movement down it can also be done with weights. If you have some weight but the usual speed you perform movements at isn’t doing anything. You can slow the movement down creating a greater muscle response than you are used to.

What is an isometric hold?

An isometric hold is another form of time under tension. You will probably know these from doing planks, core holds or squat holds. If you add this to your training is will give you a better stimulus. For example, if you do a lunge at a usual speed for you and then add an isometric lunge hold directly after it. It will increase the intensity of the movement. These are a great way to progress before doing weights with your movements and also if your training from home.

Do I need to go to the gym to increase intensity?

Going to the gym is something personal to you. Whether you are comfortable being in a gym full of people or not. It can be a great way to increase intensity and load to get more results through training. However, you don’t have to go to the gym. You can train at home or at the local park with a personal trainer. They will bring the knowledge and the equipment so that you can increase the intensity and load. Without having to be in a gym where you might not be comfortable.
